TRACKS OF MEMORY: ARMENIA’S ABANDONED RAILWAYS (X)

The three Armenian railway lines are three dead ends on the country’s border. As a consequence of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict war, the railroad borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan have been closed. Nowadays, the tracks have been destroyed and stolen by looters, many tunnels are blocked, stations and technical buildings are in disrepair or in ruins.

The closure of these railways has destroyed inter-ethnic ties for many years and led to the economic decline of these areas and the quality of life. But all the dead ends are not alike, somewhere the tracks have been abandoned for miles and miles, and somewhere the locals services maintain the infrastructure in the hope of a possible opening.
